"Java Web Start" based GPAD deployment
GPAD download application for Java Runtime Environment JRE-1.10 and older rely on "Java Web Start" that is included in these virtual machines. In JRE-1.11 and more recent ones "Java Web Start" is not included. Java Network Launching Protocol (JNLP), which is a XML file type is used to provide "Java Web Start" application the necessary download information and execution arguments. However, download process handling of JNLP files depend on the browser, security and the setup used to handle internet files. Once a JNLP file is downloaded it can be used anytime by "Java Web Start".
- Internet Explorer: Handling of JNLP files depend on brower version. In older Internet Explorer
when the browser "internet options" include JNLP association with Java Web Start, the latter starts automatically once JNLP is downloaded. If no association to JNLP file is included in the "internet options" a prompt appears in the bottom above the status bar of the browser window. Select Save. Click on "Open with" then select Java Web Start from a list of applications.
In newer Internet Explorer, when JNLP file is downloaded, a prompt appears in the bottom above the status bar of the browser window. Select Save in the prompt, then click on "Open with" then Java Web Start from a list of applications. GPAD download application is then downloaded and deployed.
- Chrome: When JNLP file is downloaded, a prompt appears in the bottom-left corner right above the status bar of the browser window. Select Keep in the prompt, then click on dowloaded JNLP file to launch Java Web Start. GPAD download application is then downloaded and deployed.
-
Firefox: The first time JNLP file is downloaded Firefox asks to Open or Save downloaded JNLP file . If Open is selected with Java Web Start launcher GPAD download application is downloaded and deployed. If Save is selected JNLP file can be used later as well from Firefox download folder or else if moved.
- Edge: The first time JNLP file is downloaded Edge asks to Save or Cancel the download. Choose Save to proceed with GPAD download application and deployment. Downloaded JNLP file can be used later as well form Edge download folder or else if moved.
